The Essentials Are Packed, So Let’s Roll! (Or…Fly!)

First things first: Singaporean runners, never fear.  I know, I know – we missed the chance for a Group Cheer Squad at the Mt. Faber Run this weekend.  I’m super bummed myself.  But I’m sure we all agree that postponing the run (because of the haze, if you’re just tuning in) was a prudent idea.  BUT stay tuned and keep an eye on the blog – I have some exciting things in the works, and believe me: There will be more organized cheer sessions, starting in mid-July.

Secondly: I survived the treadmill run.  Special thanks go to The Closer, all of your encouraging comments (which I read during two very brief walk-breaks), and the inspiration of some friends who were embarking on similar long, haze-induced treadmill runs for getting me through.  My take-away message from this run is: Chunking (breaking down a large task into many smaller ones) is a powerful psychological trick!!  I’ll be revisiting this lesson in another post soon.

And thirdly: It’s time for another adventure!  At the moment, I’m sitting at Changi Airport, listening to a (very depressing) program on the kidnapping and selling of children into the sex trade in Southeast Asia.  This is not exactly happy material, but ignorance is no solution either.

On the brighter side, in less than 30 minutes, I’ll be boarding a plane headed for New Jersey (via Narita, Japan).  If you’ve been reading this blog for awhile, then you know that love New Jersey.  This trip is quite a lot more celebratory than the one earlier this year, so I’m pretty pumped.  I’ll be hitting up some of my favorite cities on the East Coast: Home, the greater DC area, and Rochester.  I just checked a bag that contains, among other things, my running gear, a sizzling red dress, and appropriate footwear for everything from trail running to wedding dancing.  I’ll be carrying the following onto the plane:

1. Extra layers

2. Plenty of snacks.

2. Plenty of snacks.

3. My smile (and shiny forehead).

Twenty four hours of travel, here I come!!

    Safe travels Holly and have a lovely time. I guess we’ll pass in the air somewhere when I’m relocating and you’re coming back so if you ever venture to the southern states, you’ll need to look me up. I’ve never got into blogs before but really enjoy reading yours and Grace’s and will keep doing so. As for my Monday? While you’re sitting scrunched up on the plane, I’m frantically trying to get ready for the packers who arrive in 2hrs and deciding what goes by sea and what I can’t possibly live without for the next 8 weeks!

      Hahaha. Hope the packing went smoothly – when we moved out here, I was amazed at how efficient and fast the movers were, on both ends. I had never used movers before, but this convinced me that GOOD movers are worth their weight in gold! Hope you had a good experience. 🙂

      I do think we’ll have to wave in passing…and I’m still keeping Vancouver 2014 under consideration. Plus, we have a quinoa party to have, at some point. =)

          No promises, that’s a long way away. But I look for any excuse to visit the Big V. It’s one of my favorite places!!

          And I guess a virtual party/Skype party could work, but…somehow it seems like that might be less-than-satisfying, no?

    I hope you are wearing your compression socks for your flight. Your feet and legs will thank you! 🙂 I take cut up apples, carrots, craisins, and water on my infrequent flights.

    I will be running and training clients while you fly. By greater DC area, where will you be? VA burbs or MD burbs?

      Well…..I didn’t exactly where my expensive compression sleeves (they static to my stretchy pants and drive me crazy…I know, I know…not a good excuse), but I did wear a pretty tight pair of “regular” knee-high socks. And as I didn’t do much working out on Sunday, my legs are feeling pretty rested/itchy for having had 2 days in a row OFF. Will take them out running tomorrow. 🙂

      I’ll be in the Bethesda area for most of the time. How close is that to you?

        I’m across the Potomac in Virginia. My friend Miles (that you hear me talk about) is over in that area in Maryland. Wish I had a run planned for over there with him… I’d hit you up to join us! 🙂

    Have a great time on your trip! Hope all of that traveling goes smoothly.

    Favorite plane snacks: pretzels and a Biscoff cookie if I fly Delta 🙂 Tomorrow (Monday) I will be walking around while at work, but probably also doing a fair amount of driving during work. Our legs will have similar experiences, I guess 🙂

      My legs are longing to be freeeeeeeeee! They really wanted to go for a run tonight, but alas, by the time we got home, it was time for dinner, etc, etc, etc. Will be taking them out tomorrow AM!

  4. Enjoy your travels 🙂 You healthy living bloggers are so great in terms of packing food with you on the plane. I’ve always just eaten whatever they give me but then again most of my long flights were overnight and I was completely passed out sleeping.

    Yay on surviving the treadmill run 😀 I knew you could do it 😀

      Hahaha – honestly, I don’t even do it for health reasons. But after about 2 airline-food meals, just the thought of another makes me feel rather nauseous (admittedly, this is with US airlines; some international carriers have considerably better food). And with 24 hours of travel and one short stopover, I can’t always count on having time to buy a real meal. So I started bringing my own snacks, just because I actually LIKE the food I’m eating, then. This is the first time I’ve done it SO seriously; totally worth it!!!

    HAVE FUN! So sorry I am not there to greet you with open arms in NJ! I try as hard as I can to sleep on flights. Usually they feed you pretty well on international flights 🙂

      They do, and while some airlines (Singapore, ANA, Air New Zealand) have some pretty decent food (in my experience), United’s international fare leaves me feeling a bit nauseous after a meal or two. I don’t know if it’s the texture, the saltiness, or the fact that they all sorta taste the same, but I was much happier eating the fruit and salad they brought, and a few bits where I felt inclined, but knowing that I had my snacks to supplement when I was getting munchy!!

      Wish you were here for a run, as well…but glad you’re enjoying the mountains with a great guy! But hey…have a line on any fun July 4th running in the area?
