Good Mornings for a Wednesday (April 16)

The blogging hiatus has to end – I miss you folks! And as much as I enjoy other social media outlets (I think my blog-lag began when I joined Twitter), I’ve missed blogging, big time. And like I tell my athletes: If it matters to you, you’ll make time for it.

So it’s time to make time!

Plus (just wrote ‘pus’ – that would be a gross way to get back into things!), I have race reports, training logs, funny photos, and stretches to share. (Thankfully, no pus.)  But let’s start with a nice gentle re-entry: a “Good Morning” post!

[These are basically a way for my non-Instagramming self to photo dump on you, and share little anecdotes/funnies/musings/Singapore sights, without being my usual wordy self.  But if you’re a new reader, feel free to check out this Welcome! post a quick orientation and some background info.]


I made falafel for dinner last night.

My recipe is all kinds of delicious, but without being bitter at all.
It’s easy and soooo tasty.
Fried is tastier than baked, so I use a bit of olive oil and call it ‘healthy fats’!


Love notes from my boss…

As a running coach, I use just my big voice to yell to my groups.
But in the cycling room, with music pumping, a mic is necessary.
Mics are finicky. They get broken, sweaty, and bent.
And my bosses are always reminding us of this (with good reason).
Consequence: An unacceptably high percentage of
mic photos vs cute baby photos in my text messages lately.
Those of you with cute babies, please help me fix this. STAT.

At least, that’s what I was trying to show off.
Instead, I discovered embarrassing grown out fuzzies on the back of my neck.
‘Out of sight, Out of mind.’  Quite literally.
Do I trust my husband with a razor to tidy things up until my next trim?
He shaves his face, so I have to assume he knows what he’s doing, right?


My Wednesday lunch. Every week.

I’m spoiled for choice for lunch options downtown.
But this one is reliable, convenient, and fuels me through my evening classes.
The veggie quesadilla has a spicy sweet mustard sauce that is magical.
And yes, I eat a cupcake like that.  Every week.
And proud of it.


Call it self-absorbed, but I enjoy selfies.
And bubble tea.

Bubble tea is on every corner here,
But this was my first taste of Artease tea.
I opted for the Cinnamon Milk Tea – delicious!
But the bubbles were a bit soft & chewy for my liking.




I’ll bet your day is better than his….

I step on that very spot sometimes when I go to the kopi (coffee shop).
Selfishly, I’m glad the cave-in didn’t send my leg through the pavers.
Still…I felt bad for the owner.
[But not so bad that I didn’t snap a photo…]
I wanted to stick around to see how he got out, but had to zip to work.
This spot is now roped off with CAUTION tape…

    Welcome back! Your lunch looks very good… much better than the leftovers I had!

    Random about my week: It’s spring break here so a lot of my clients are away this week and it’s almost like I’m on vacation! My plan was to catch up on Quicken, but I find myself reading blogs and catching up with posts instead! Ha!

      I eat leftovers most days for lunch, but on Wednesdays I work downtown all day, so treat myself to lunch. And seriously, I look forward to it starting the day before. 🙂

      Tomorrow is a public holiday here (Good Friday), and I was hoping to spend the day binging on blog reading/commenting/writing too, but mysteriously found my day filling up with commitments… Guess I’ll have to spend the afternoon on blogland instead! 🙂 And regardless of how you spend it, enjoy your ‘break’! 🙂

    I have missed you! I was actually getting a tad bit concerned so I am glad to hear that all is well. I am taking my own little hiatus this week, spending spring break with the kids, family and friends. Welcome back!

      To be honest, I totally under-estimated the amount of time that teaching spin would require. It’s awesome, and I LOVE it – but I am totally unable to do anything halfway. So I’ve taken on quite a few classes, plus additional training, another indoor cycling certification, a growing list of running clients, and a few big plans in the works for the next few months – plus my own running. The organization of my days has changed a lot in the last three months, and somehow the ‘blogging time’ I had blocked out in 2013 got lost in the shuffle.

      But I need to make time for things that matter to me – so I’m making some necessary adjustments. 🙂

    I’m making time to recover this week. Sunday’s race left me feeling drained – or was it all the energy I spent getting on the plane and dealing with my anxiety? Either way I was tired so I’ve given myself a few recovery days. And I’m starting to feel great again. Just in time for tomorrow’s run.

      I give you a great big ‘high five’ for the travel that you did – it would be so easy for you to decline to travel, knowing the potential stress it could bring. And yet, you sucked it up and did it anyway (and hopefully spent the un-anxious moments having fun!). Doing something scary (more than scary, actually) takes courage – and you accepted the challenge. Thanks for sharing this part of yourself with us, and letting us cheer you on.

      Also? Take those rest days. The body calls for what it needs. You are wise to listen!

    I’m making time to read this week…I’ve been stopping and starting my book and not loving it, but once I sat down and actually invested some time in it, it became much more interesting. I’m reading ‘The Omnivore’s Dilemma’ about the food industry and it’s both deeply depressing and quite challenging as well. I need to make some resolutions about how I’ll eat differently when I’ve finished it.

      Oh, it’s like you’re reading my mind! I’ve fiddled at the start of at least three books lately, and haven’t been able to really dig in – and I think you’re absolutely correct – it’s just investing enough time at the start to get invested in the story.

      Read T.O.D. a few years ago, then a few more times since. It’s a lot to think about, a lot to process, and raises more questions than it answers – but as uncomfortable as they are, there’s no doubt in my mind that it’s an important read. “Enjoy”? <--Weird thing to say about that book...

        oh, I’ve yet to get to Omnivore’s Dilemma! there is such a thing as hard fun, and maybe I’m a bit of a masochist, but reading things that challenge me mentally is enjoyable for me. (Everyone should go and read Dan Fagin’s Toms River, which is a chronicle of pollution and cancer – it won the Pulitzer for general nonfiction this year!)

        making time for…uhhh can I say sleep? because that is what I’ll be doing most of this weekend.

          Personally,holding off on Toms River, as that’s where my Dad’s side of the family lived, starting when he was a teenager. Little bit scared…

    I haven’t had falafel in forever – I am making this eggplant stuffed with falafel recipe I found on Saturday – hopefully it comes out good! It’s a healthified version but I am trying to be open minded and also feel less guilty about eating more brownies. I am making time to go look at daycares this week and it is terrifying. Something random – I got bloodwork done and didn’t spent the 48 hours prior crippled with anxiety. That’s huge progress in my world.

      Oh, goodness. Childcare IS terrifying. I hope you are less terrified afterward than you were before, but I’m not sure that’s the case (especially when you look at the cost). EEEPS.

      On the plus side, you were not (quite) terrified by the bloodwork. Congrats. How do you do with IVs? Because that might be part of the whole ‘giving birth’ thing (although I’m not sure…I’ve never done it…). Good luck.

      And how was that eggplant falafel? KMN isn’t too keen on eggplant, but I cook for myself plenty, and these sound like baba ganoush meets falafel to me. Just, a big ‘ole Mediterranean food party. I’m there. SO there.

    Hey stranger! Good to see you back in blogland 🙂 I would not trust the husband with a razor, but maybe your case is different, haha. That veggie quesadilla looks de-licious!

    Here’s something random: I would have been able to guess when you said kopi that you were referring to a coffee shop. One of the random things we learned about in school (remember, degree in Food Science) was about Kopi Luwak. I’m sure you probably know this, but that’s the high dollar coffee produced from beans that are “fermented” by the Asian palm civet. Oh and I joined Twitter and my blog is self-hosted now (both if which I think you know!)

      Well, the tuft is still there, so I haven’t trusted him yet. We’ll see how much longer the image of the tuft sticks in my memory (and whether it’s ever there when he’s home, and neither of us are busy).

      Excited about your technology ventures (although: time suck! time suck! time suck!!!!) – and I love that you know ‘kopi’. Additional interesting factoid right back atchya: traditional Singaporean kopi beans are bitter. They are roasted with butter to help soften the flavor, then ground and – traditionally – the ground coffee us put in a tube sock, through which hot water is poured. The sock acts as the filter. [Although nowadays, the kopi uncles just use a muslin or other similar fabric, rather than an actual sock.]

    Yay! You’re back!! 🙂

    This week I’m making time for stretching and knitting. To balance out the higher mileage marathon training weeks, I have to have a significant amount of downtime. I find it ridiculously hard to just sit still and relax sometimes, but I know my body needs it.

      SUCH a good idea to have sedentary hobbies to help remind yourself to sit and chill during those high mileage weeks. I’ll admit that most of my hobbies (cooking and baking, mostly) aren’t particularly conducive to resting off my feet. Sudoku isn’t bad, though! 🙂

As someone WAY behind on blog reading, that temptation is sometimes very strong – and also necessary, at times.       And I very much enjoy your random thing. (You must enjoy jack Johnson’s The Three R’s song…) I very much enjoy numbers myself, and certainly have feelings toward many of them. I generally don’t like those that end in 7 (27 is an exception, as it’s a multiple of 9). But 17, 37, 47…all feel pointy, awkward, and very unfriendly. So I get you.

      And yes, it’s great to be back! (Now, to write that next post… 😉 )

        It’s strange, because my go-to random number is 17. They’re unfriendly, 17, 37, 47, because nothing goes into them. And you’re right – they’re pokey.

      Ewww! Stinky road kill!! Interestingly, as there aren’t many medium/large animals running free in Singapore, it’s something that hardly ever happens here (probably good, because things would get ripe pretty fast in the heat). But I know the smell well! *gag*
